Scarborough - Whitby; Cinder Trail, incorporating Scarborough promenade at the beginning.
The beginning of the Cinder Trail is a bit dull so we like to divert along the sea front, picking the trail up at the back of the golf course.
The first half of the trail (to Ravenscar) is a gentle but almost continuous uphill stretch.
Then, there’s almost no need to pedal from Ravenscar down to Robin Hood’s Bay. Don’t race down though as that area of track is very bumpy with rocks jutting out of the ground.
One final uphill stretch coming out of RHB until you cross the main A171 road at Hawsker, then downhill on a paved bridleway all the way to Whitby.
Whichever way you do this trail, the National Trust shop at Ravenscar is your psychological ‘reward’ point as it’s the midway mark AND the highest point of the trail with long, gradual downhill stretches of several miles in both directions.
The trail is glorious on dry, sunny days and, whilst still easily navigable in bad weather, there are lots of puddles so expect to get muddy when it’s wet.
