The Myth: The National Ski Tour on the Dachstein
The Dachstein is a special mountain and unfolds its magic and attraction especially on a ski tour. The world of snow, ice and rock is still impressive despite the retreat of the Dachstein glacier. Ski tourers who want to experience this world from the Styrian side are best off taking the Dachstein Südwandbahn up to the top station at 2,600 metres.
After a short ascent, the wonderful descent follows in the direction of the Simony-Hütte. After a stop at the hut, which is also open in winter, you can continue the descent to Obertraun or climb back up to the mountain station.
The Rumpler-Runde, which starts at the Krippenstein in Upper Austria, can also be tackled if you are fit enough. Experts then descend to Ramsau via the mountainous Edelgrieß variant.
Ski tours for experts with fitness
For those who enjoy long and challenging ski tours, the region offers plenty to do. Not only the Dachstein offers long and challenging tours, but also the Niedere Tauern offer an almost inexhaustible range of tours that clearly break the 1,000-metre-high mark.
In the east of the Schladming Dachstein region are the Planneralm and Donnersbach.
In the east of the Schladming Dachstein Region lie the Planneralm and Donnersbachwald, two popular destinations for ski tours. The Planneralm scores with a high starting altitude, as the village lies at 1,600 metres. The cable cars are often used to start the ski tour with a downhill run and descend into one of the adjacent basins, as in the tour to Hintergullingspitz.
Skinning up, skiing down, skinning up, skiing down. And in between enjoy the fascinating mountain panorama and the wonderful deep snow.
The ski tours in the Sölktäer Nature Park are among the region's insider tips. There are rewarding ski tours in both the Small and the Large Sölktal, which are among the most scenic in Styria. As this is a nature park, only the designated routes should be followed. Among the most beautiful tours are those to the Deneck and, in spring, the long tour to the Knallstein.
